KBIA: Attempt to override president’s veto of children’s health insurance program
Suggested host intro: Democrats are trying to recover after failing to override the president’s veto of a children’s health insurance program. Columbia Republican Congressman Kenny Hulshof says that‘s a good thing. Matt Laslo reports from Capitol Hill.
NARR: Democrats have been fighting for months to expand the state children’s health insurance program. They knew the president wouldn’t like the extra thirty-five billion dollars they added so they even included a cigarette tax to pay for it. But the president still vetoed the measure and Democrats failed to override it. Congressman Hulshof supported the President.
SCHIP_HULSHOF_10-18-07: “The 2007 version of the Children’s Health Insurance Program is almost unrecognizable from the original bill, certainly beyond the original intent of that bill.”
Now it’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s choice. She will either try again and hope to embarrass Republicans even more – or make some changes to convince ten or so Republicans to switch votes.
For KBIA, I’m Matt Lalso on Capitol Hill.
