WFDD: Virginia Foxx polling constituents on Bush’s Iraq war policies
Suggested host intro: Fifth District Republican Congresswoman Virginia Foxx has been polling her constituents – she wants to know if they like Bush’s policies in Iraq. Matt Laslo on Capitol Hill with the results.
NARR: Foxx’s office e-mailed constituents and put a poll on her website, asking if they – quote – “support the current war
efforts.” So far, two thousand four hundred and seventy-two people have responded. Fifty-six percent are supportive and thirty-seven percent aren’t. Foxx didn’t expect the poll to sway her support, and says she hasn’t been paying much attention to it.
FOXX1-INTERESTING.MP3 :15 “Well, we just thought it might be interesting to see what kind of response we got from our constituents. I haven’t checked the numbers on it, but we just thought it would be interesting.”
She says her constituents don’t really bring up the war anymore, and that is why she wanted to get feedback. Twelfth District Democratic Congressman Mel Watt has opposed the war from the beginning. While he hasn’t put out a poll, he says he and Foxx get a similar response from constituents.
WATT1-OVER AGAIN :10 “The war at some level has become a silent issue in my congressional district because everybody has heard what I’ve had to say about it. They’ve heard me repeat it over and over again.”
North Carolinians will get to hear both Watt and Foxx debate the war later this fall when the house again takes up legislation to end the war.
